The disorder known as sleep apnea is characterized by repeated stops in your breathing while you sleep. This is caused by the muscles relaxing and gravity closing your airways. This momentary suffocation creates excessive strain on the body, which may lead to complications like hypertension, memory loss, mood change, weight gain, and fatigue. There are lots of sleep apnea solutions to choose from, varying from airway surgeries such as an adenoidectomy, maxillofacial surgery, tonsillectomy, or a CPAP device. Sometimes people aren't satisfied with these solutions. In these cases, they may turn to dental options to help alleviate the issue. At Robert L. Porter Dentistry in Richardson, TX, we concentrate on producing custom-fit nighttime guards to offer relief to our sleep apnea patients. Board-certified dentist Dr. Robert Porter is pleased to offer custom oral appliance therapy (OAT) that may help you enjoy better sleep and overall health.

If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, a custom oral appliance may be able to help. Sleep apnea can be harmful because it stops you from breathing hundreds of times a night as the passages in your soft palate and throat collapse. When this occurs, your airway is obstructed, preventing oxygen from getting to your brain and other organs. So naturally, it's imperative to have it treated and diagnosed properly using the very best options available. If you think you may have sleep apnea, Dr. Porter can refer you to a medical doctor for diagnosis.
What To Expect
Dr. Porter uses an oral appliance therapy (OAT) for sleep apnea, which can be a very effective treatment for sleep apnea. It's a customized oral device designed to be used at night. It is often compared to a mouth guard for sports or a retainer. The primary difference is that rather than protecting your teeth from injury, it softly places the jaw into a forward position to keep your airway open. There are over a hundred different versions on the market, so Dr. Porter will work together with you to be certain you receive the ideal one for you. This will be determined after he performs an examination of your teeth, jaw, tongue, and airway. Your dental appliance can then be made from digital or physical impressions.
After your appliance has been made, it will be returned to our office. Robert L. Porter Dentistry will call you for your follow-up appointment. Dr. Porter will adjust and fit it according to your feedback to make it as comfortable as possible. He will also take as much time as you need to teach you about your snoring/sleep apnea appliance, including the proper way to store, clean, and maintain it. Dr. Porter will ask you to bring your device to future appointments to check the fit and condition of the device. Your overall quality of life should dramatically improve if you use your oral appliance every night.
Insurance coverage for sleep apnea therapies varies, so we'll contact your dental insurance provider to help us determine your out-of-pocket expenses. Whether you have dental insurance or not, Dr. Porter can give you price estimates while discussing your treatment choices. To help make your dental procedures easy to afford, Robert L. Porter Dentistry takes several payment methods, including low-interest medical financing.
