Dental Sleep Medicine candidates
If you or someone you know wakes up with headaches, feeling run down, fatigued, and/or has a sore jaw, dental sleep medicine may be what you need.
Oral appliance therapy: Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when muscles in the back of your throat relax and cause the airway to narrow or even close as you breathe. The amount of air you are receiving is diminished and can lower oxygen in your blood.
You may have already been prescribed CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy, but in some cases, patients find this can be uncomfortable and challenging. If you are struggling with CPAP therapy, oral appliance therapy may be a good alternative.
Night guard therapy: Bruxism is a condition in which you grind, gnash, or clench your teeth. This can happen unconsciously or when you're awake. Patients who clench or grind their teeth while sleeping are more apt to have other disorders, such as snoring and sleep apnea. A custom night guard appliance may be the solution. It is designed to treat this condition and protect both your teeth and jaw.
If you think you may have sleep apnea or bruxism, Dr. Porter can refer you to a medical doctor for a diagnosis.
What To Expect with Dental Sleep Medicine
Dr. Porter’s team at Robert L. Porter Dentistry in Richardson, TX customizes the therapy, depending on the needs of the patient. For sleep apnea and snoring, Dr. Porter may create a custom oral appliance that is designed to stabilize the lower jaw and keep it from moving forward in the mouth. This prevents the soft tissue from obstructing the airway. Or, if a patient is suffering from bruxism, a custom night guard may be created to help minimize the effects of teeth grinding and sore jaw joints. When a custom appliance is being created, we will first take impressions of your teeth. Then, we will send them to our partner dental lab where the appliance is constructed of high-quality materials. You will then come in for a fitting and we will adjust it for comfort.
Dental Sleep Medicine Follow-Up
Once fitted, you will be shown how to care for your oral appliance and the proper way to use it and store it. You may need to come into our Richardson, TX office for an adjustment or two. It’s important to provide feedback to make it as comfortable as possible and let us know right away if it comes loose or damaged. Dr. Porter will ask you to bring your device to future appointments to check the fit and condition. You should notice improvements fairly quickly if you use your oral appliance as instructed.

Insurance coverage for sleep apnea therapies varies, but it may be covered or at least in part. Our office can assist you in determining this and help you minimize your out-of-pocket cost. Robert L. Porter Dentistry provides several payment solutions, including low-interest medical financing.
