A dental inlay or onlay can repair a damaged or decayed tooth when the amount of tooth structure involved requires less than full crown coverage. Used on molars and pre-molars, an inlay covers the indented middle of a tooth and onlays cover the rounded, upper edges of a tooth. Like dental fillings and crowns, onlays and inlays can be created using a variety of materials — metal, porcelain, and composite resin. Board-certified dentist Dr. Robert Porter can help Richardson, TX patients understand fillings, crowns, onlays, and inlays before they make an informed decision about restoring their teeth at Robert L. Porter Dentistry.
"I drive a long way, from Flower Mound, to see this dentist and his hygienist. I pick a time of day when the traffic's not so bad - it's well worth the trip to have a team you have full confidence in. Dr. Porter explains things well, and tells me what my options are. A dental inlay or onlay is a good option when you have a damaged tooth or a large cavity that's too big for a conventional filling, but does not require the full protection of a crown. At your examination, Dr. Porter will examine your teeth and x-rays to determine the ideal treatment for your needs. If an onlay or inlay is chosen, he will go over the available materials that will best suit your needs. Dr. Porter is pleased to be able to offer direct restorations (an onlay or inlay created in our office using CEREC technology while you wait).
What To Expect
inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide) is available for patients with dental anxieties. After you are comfortable and the tooth is numb, Dr. Porter will begin by cleaning out regions of decay. When the damaged tooth is cleaned, impressions will be produced from your tooth. Dr. Porter can use the impressions to design and mill your restoration with his in-office CEREC machine when the direct approach is indicated. In cases when the indirect approach is indicated, you will receive a temporary restoration for a short period while the permanent restoration is being fabricated. When your restoration is ready, Dr. Porter will carefully bond it to your tooth. He will polish the borders or adjust the fit so that your tooth is properly covered and feels smooth.
Following your appointment, you should be able to get back to your regular activities. Your dental inlay or onlay should be cleaned just like your own teeth using daily flossing and brushing. You need to schedule twice yearly dental examinations and cleanings at Robert L. Porter Dentistry so Dr. Porter can evaluate the wear and health of the restoration. With proper maintenance, it should last for several years before it needs repairing or replacing.
Onlays and inlays are a common procedure for dental cavities and other damage, so they are generally paid in part by insurance. Our office can talk to your insurer to ascertain your particular policy coverage. During your consultative appointment, a member of our team at Robert L Porter Dentistry will discuss fees and payment methods we take, including low-cost dental financing.
